Xfinity WiFi Extenders FAQs

Xfinity WiFi Extenders help improve WiFi coverage throughout your home. This article answers common questions about purchasing, setting up, using, and troubleshooting Xfinity WiFi Extender.

General FAQs

What are Xfinity WiFi Extenders?
Xfinity WiFi Extenders work with a compatible Xfinity Gateway to create a mesh WiFi network. They help reduce weak-signal areas, often called "dead spots," and improve WiFi coverage throughout your home.

How are Xfinity WiFi Extenders different from traditional WiFi Extenders?
Xfinity WiFi Extenders create a mesh WiFi network that works together with your Xfinity Gateway.

Benefits include:

  • Better whole-home coverage.
  • Simple activation and easy management using the Xfinity app.
  • Automatic connection to the strongest signal.

Traditional WiFi extenders extend coverage from a single location but don't provide the same seamless mesh experience.

How do I know if I need Xfinity WiFi Extenders?
You may benefit from Xfinity WiFi Extenders if some rooms in your home have weak, inconsistent, or no WiFi coverage.

Will Xfinity WiFi Extenders increase my internet speed?
No. Xfinity WiFi Extenders do not increase your internet speed. They help improve WiFi coverage by extending your WiFi signal to areas of your home with weak or no connection.

Do I need Xfinity WiFi Extenders to get the best WiFi coverage in my home?
Many homes get excellent coverage from a compatible Xfinity Gateway alone. If you have weak-signal areas or dead spots, Xfinity WiFi Extenders can help extend coverage.

Are Xfinity WiFi Extenders compatible with all Xfinity Gateways?
Xfinity WiFi Extenders work with most Xfinity Gateway. They are not compatible with the Cisco DPC3939 Gateway.

What is the difference between 1st Generation and 2nd Generation Xfinity WiFi Extenders?
2nd Generation Xfinity WiFi Extenders offer stronger performance, wider coverage, and an Ethernet port for wired connections.

Because they provide better coverage, you may need fewer 2nd Generation extenders to cover your home.

Can I use 1st Generation and 2nd Generation Xfinity WiFi Extenders together?
Yes. Both generations can work on the same network.

For best results, activate your 2nd Generation extenders first and allow up to 48 hours for the network to optimize. If you still need additional coverage, you can add your older extenders back as needed. Avoid using more extenders than necessary, as this can affect performance.

Should I upgrade to 2nd Generation Xfinity WiFi Extenders?
If you’re happy with the coverage and performance of your current Xfinity WiFi Extenders, you may not need to upgrade.

If you'd like stronger coverage, improved performance, or wired connection options, 2nd Generation WiFi Extenders may be a good choice.

Do Xfinity WiFi Extenders require the Xfinity app?
Yes. You'll need the Xfinity app to activate, manage, and troubleshoot your Xfinity WiFi Extenders.

Purchasing Xfinity WiFi Extenders

How can I get Xfinity WiFi Extenders?
Eligible Xfinity Internet customers can purchase Xfinity WiFi Extenders online at xfinity.com or at an Xfinity Retail Store.

To order online, sign in to your account as the Primary or Manager user. If you place an order online you’ll be sent a Getting Started Kit to the address on your account with everything you need for easy setup.

How much do Xfinity WiFi Extenders cost?
Eligible customers can purchase:

  • One Xfinity WiFi Extender for $119.
  • Two Xfinity WiFi Extenders for $199.

Shipping and handling charges apply to online orders. The purchase will appear on your next bill as "Xfinity WiFi Extenders."

How many Xfinity WiFi Extenders should I buy?
Xfinity WiFi Extenders can be purchased individually or in packs of two.

As a general guideline:

  • One 2nd Generation Xfinity WiFi Extender works well for many homes with three to four bedrooms and multiple floors.
  • Two 2nd Generation Xfinity WiFi Extenders may provide better coverage in larger homes with five or more bedrooms and multiple floors.

The number of extenders you need depends on your home's size, layout, gateway location, and building materials. Using too many extenders can reduce performance, so start with fewer and add more only if needed.

Installation and setup

How do I install and activate my Xfinity WiFi Extender?
Xfinity WiFi Extenders are easy to install — no professional installation is needed.

For activation steps, see Activate your Xfinity WiFi Extenders using the Xfinity app.

Can a technician install my Xfinity WiFi Extenders?
No. Xfinity WiFi Extenders are designed for easy self-installation.

If a technician is already at your home for an installation or service appointment, they can help install your extenders during that visit.

Can I use Xfinity WiFi Extenders if my Xfinity Gateway is in Bridge Mode?
No. Xfinity WiFi Extenders require a compatible Xfinity Gateway that is not in Bridge Mode.

If your gateway is in Bridge Mode, turn off Bridge Mode before setting up your extenders. For details, see Using Bridge Mode on your wireless gateway.

Can I place Xfinity WiFi Extenders outdoors?
No. Xfinity WiFi Extenders are designed for indoor use only.

For outdoor coverage, place an extender indoors near the area where you need a better signal.

Do I have to use all the Xfinity WiFi Extenders that come in the set?
No. You can activate only the extenders you want to use.

Any unused extenders will appear as offline in the Xfinity app until they are activated or removed.

Can I share a set of Xfinity WiFi Extenders with a friend or family member?
Yes. You can share Xfinity WiFi Extenders with someone else as long as they have Xfinity Internet service and a compatible Xfinity Gateway.

It’s recommended to activate the Xfinity WiFi Extenders you're keeping first. The person receiving the extenders can activate them using the Xfinity app and their Xfinity ID.

Can I rename my Xfinity WiFi Extenders?

  1. Select WiFi.
  2. Select View WiFi equipment.
  3. Select the Xfinity WiFi Extender you want to name or rename.

How can I check if my Xfinity WiFi Extenders are working?
You can check the status of your Xfinity WiFi Extenders in the Xfinity app:

  1. Select WiFi.
  2. Select View WiFi equipment.

If a Xfinity WiFi Extender is offline, it will be indicated here and you can follow troubleshooting steps. If the Xfinity WiFi Extender is online and working, it will have a green status.

Do I need to reactivate extenders if I replace my Xfinity Gateway or move?
No. Once your new compatible Xfinity Gateway is activated, your extenders should reconnect automatically.

If you have any issues during activation, or if you cannot reconnect your Xfinity WiFi Extenders, please contact Xfinity.

What is the Ethernet port on the Xfinity WiFi Extender used for?
You can use the Ethernet port to connect supported devices directly for a wired connection. A wired connection may provide a more stable experience and can be helpful in large homes or areas with WiFi interference.

Troubleshooting

Why did some of my devices disconnect after I activated my Xfinity WiFi Extenders?
Your network may have switched to a single WiFi name and password during setup.

Reconnect any affected devices using your current WiFi name and password.

Why can I no longer have different WiFi network names and passwords for my 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi networks?
Xfinity WiFi Extenders require that you only have one WiFi network name and password, so all your devices can seamlessly connect to the network.

My extenders show online, but I'm still having WiFi issues. What should I do?
Try these steps:

  • Move the extender closer to the gateway.
  • Connect devices using Ethernet when possible.
  • Restart the affected device.
  • Add another extender if coverage is still limited.

How can I fix an offline Xfinity WiFi Extender?

  1. Open the Xfinity app.
  2. Select WiFi.
  3. Select the offline Xfinity WiFi Extender from the list.
  4. Select Help Me Fix It.

Follow the troubleshooting steps provided.

How can I remove an Xfinity WiFi Extender that shows as offline?
If you're no longer using an Xfinity WiFi Extender, you can remove it from the Xfinity app so it no longer appears as offline.

  1. Select WiFi.
  2. Select View WiFi equipment.
  3. Choose the Xfinity WiFi Extender you want to remove.
  4. Select Device Details.
    Select Remove Xfinity WiFi Extender.

Why is my Xfinity WiFi Extender blinking or losing connection?
A blinking Xfinity WiFi Extender may mean your network is optimizing, the extender is too far from the gateway, or there is an issue with your internet connection.

To improve performance:

  • Place the extender about halfway between your gateway and the area with weak WiFi coverage.
  • Make sure the extender and gateway are not blocked by furniture or large objects.
  • If you have multiple extenders, try to place each one where it can connect directly to the gateway when possible.

For more information, see Managing and optimizing your WiFi network.

Returns and Warranty

Can I return or exchange my Xfinity WiFi Extenders?
